There are so many things to do when you're planning a move. Don't let
stress take the joy out of moving to a new home. Most professional
moving companies offer packing services. This is always the recommended
way to go. Moving Company personnel are packing experts. You're much
less likely to have any breakage or damage when you let the pros handle
it. And, if there is damage, they're responsible and liable for it.
If you're packing yourself, let us offer you some tips from the experts:
Start well in advance!
Organize your home. Go through, room by room. Take a look
at everything. If you don't need it, get rid of it. Move items to
the room where they will belong in the new home.
Size up your packing needs. Boxes from the grocery store are
fine for a lot of your items. Make sure you have enough. When
'crunch time' comes, you may not be able to get your hands on more. Moving
companies and packing supply stores have dish packs that are
designed for your glass dishes and wardrobe boxes that you can
hang your clothing in...great for your dress, church and work clothes. Be
sure you get enough, and ask if you can return unused ones.
Pack one room at a time. Move the essentials that you'll need
(clothing, toiletries, medications, etc) to one area of that room, and pack the
rest. Be sure to label each box with the room it belongs to and as much
detail about the contents as possible.
Don't over or under pack. Smaller boxes for heavy items, larger
boxes for lighter items. You don't want to make the weight unmanageable.
Reinforce the bottom with packing tape (do not use masking tape). Tip:
check the code on the bottom of the box. Every box has a code on the bottom
indicating the weight in pounds it can hold, and the corner crush rating.
Fill all available space. Use padding, packing, blankets, towels and
clothing items, if you can, to pad the contents of each box and use every square
inch of space. This prevents the contents from shifting, and protects from
vibration in the transport. Seal the top, label the box, and you're good
to go.
Things to remember on moving day.
Eat a good breakfast. Moving is an all day event, even if you're
just going across town. Eat a good breakfast, it may have to carry you
well beyond your next normal meal time.
Disassemble furniture. Take apart the beds and any other furniture
that needs to be disassembled. Be sure to keep all the hardware and small
pieces in one sack or box. Label that sack or box so you know what it
belongs to, and, if possible, affix it to the furniture piece itself.
Pack all the essentials. Those items you reserved out when you
packed up the house now need to be packed and labeled.
Count all your boxes, wardrobes and dish packs. If you count
them by room, it will make it easier to identify anything that is missing at the
new location. Once the movers have unloaded everything, count the boxes
and check against your original numbers.
Thank your movers! These folks have one of the hardest, most physical
jobs there is. Their bodies take a beating every single day. They
pull muscles and suffer other injuries while making sure that your belongings
reach your new home without damage.
